Insulin Pump Program
The Helwig Health and Diabetes Center offers the largest and most complete insulin pump program in the region. Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, you can:
- Attend information sessions to discuss pump therapy, gain insight into whether pump therapy may be right for you and see equipment options that can help in choosing a pump.
- Learn the skills you need for successful insulin therapy, such as carbohydrate counting and insulin adjustment.
- Receive hands-on training on how to use insulin pumps.
- Get help and support from nurse practitioners who are specialists in managing blood sugars and adjusting therapy.
About Our Classes
Switching to pump therapy is a big step for most people with diabetes, and we strive to give you the skills and confidence you need to be successful. Small classes create a relaxed, supportive atmosphere that allows you to receive individual attention. We provide extensive support throughout the transition from injections to the pump. It’s one reason why we’ve been recognized by
U.S. News & World Report as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” for endocrinology, which includes diabetes care. We are also recognized by the American Diabetes Association as a provider of Quality Self-Management Education.
To Enroll
Ask your physician for a referral. After we receive it, we’ll contact you to schedule your first session. We offer convenient day, evening and weekend classes.
The Pumper’s Support Group
Pump users, their family members, and anyone with diabetes interested in learning more about insulin pump therapy is welcome to join. The meetings are free. They are hosted by our diabetes specialists who will give you the latest news on pumps and glucose sensing technology.
If You’re On Medicare Part B
You’re eligible for medical nutritional therapy, a one-on-one visit with a dietitian to help lower blood glucose and cholesterol. You’ll learn about meal planning, carbohydrate counting, shopping tips and label reading.
Coverage includes three hours in the first year and two hours per year for follow-up services. Medical nutritional therapy does not replace the program offered by the Helwig Health and Diabetes Center. Rather, it is a complement to our program, both of which are reimbursed by Medicare to the full benefit.
